Director of Development

Location: Salem, MA
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Application Deadline: open until filled
Employment level: full-time

Design that Matters (DtM) collaborates with leading social entrepreneurs and hundreds of volunteers to solve problems in global health for and with the poor in developing countries.  As a nonprofit, DtM focuses on creating social impact in areas not served by market-based solutions.  We are currently building on the international success of our Firefly phototherapy device to launch three new technologies for newborn health.  Our goals are ambitious and the new programs will require more resources than we can raise ourselves, so we’re recruiting another teammate.

As DtM’s Director of Development, your primary mission will be fundraising.  DtM has a committed group of donors and a dedicated community of professional volunteers--and 2016 was one of the best years in the company’s history.  Building on DtM’s results, reputation and community, you will work directly with the CEO and the DtM Board of Directors to steward our existing relationships, and to cultivate new sources of program support and long-term growth capital.

About you:

  • You might be a development professional or a political campaign manager with eight years of experience.  You might be a lawyer, an architect or an engineer looking for a mid-career change and an opportunity to apply your professional experience to the social sector.

  • Regardless of your background, friends and coworkers are impressed with your persistence: you know how to get someone to answer your email or take your call.  You know how to promote ideas and recruit support.  You’ve built your own processes for turning strategies into action and for resisting the tyranny of the urgent.

  • You understand that the CEO’s time is an asset that we have to manage carefully.  You can manage the process of securing meetings with decision-makers, and at an event you’re willing to politely but forcefully steer him in and out of conversations to ensure that he meets everyone in the room.

  • You have strong professional skills, but you’re excited to take on challenges well outside your experience.  You’re comfortable socializing in the kitchen of a major donor, and with creating new processes to track opportunities in DtM’s CRM database, Salesforce.  You’re a good fit with DtM's culture of self-education and DIY.

  • You value flexibility and a work-life balance.  You’re excited about working with a small team in an open-plan design studio in Salem.  You’re available to travel to regular meetings and events around Boston and New York, less frequently on the West Coast, and infrequently to DtM program sites overseas.

  • You believe that money follows attention.  You have ideas for ways that a small organization can maintain a steady stream of attention in an environment that is saturated with innovation, and where there are many similar programs that are also doing good work.

  • You know that it takes more than money to sustain an organization like ours.  You understand that accomplishing our mission requires attracting people willing to contribute their expertise for free, or at rates well below what they could charge in the for-profit sector.  You’re excited to mentor interns and junior staff.  You enjoy throwing parties, and you write excellent thank-you letters.

Success will mean that by this time next year, you will have generated significantly more diversity in funding sources (individuals, foundations, corporations and government), and increased DtM’s annual core support so we can expand our capacity and our global impact.
